Broadway’s Finding Neverland Begins Rehearsals

Finding Neverland is one step closer to making its Broadway debut.

The musical, based on the 2004 movie of the same name starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, began rehearsals Monday in New York City.

Director Diane Paulus, who previously directed Broadway’s Pippin and Hair, brought the new cast and creative team – which includes choreographer Mia Michaels and producer Harvey Weinstein – together on Feb. 2 to do a read-through for the first time.

β€œThe first day of rehearsal is always a thrilling day,” Tony winner Paulus tells PEOPLE. “To bring everyone together, including our extraordinary cast, led by Matthew [Morrison] and Kelsey [Grammer], is unbelievably energizing for all of us. Off we go!”

Glee‘s Matthew Morrison stars as playwright J.M. Barrie opposite 33-year-old Laura Michelle Kelly, whose character Sylvia Llewlyn Davies’ four boys inspired the Peter Pan stories.”Amazing first day of rehearsals for @NeverlandBway,” Morrison, 36,Tweeted. “This is a special show!”

The actor is currently flying back and forth between New York and Los Angeles as he finishes up Glee’s final episode.

Frasier actor Grammer, 59, took a cross-country road trip to move to the Big Apple for his role as producer Charles Frohman in the musical.

Finding Neverland begins preview performances on March 15, with its official opening night set for April 15.
