Matthew Morrison has an impressive resume as a stage actor, and is a television star as teacher Will Schuester on Fox’s mega-popular Glee. Also on the list of Things To Do that the 32-year-old entertainer is still working his way through, however, was being a recording star.“I’m kind of one of those people that really just wants to do it all,” Morrison says. Glee has actually set me up to be in a position where I can make it a great album and do it right and do it on my own terms.’’ Matthew Morrison, which was released in May and debuted at No. 24 on the Billboard 200, includes duets with Elton John, Sting and recurring Glee guest Gwyneth Paltrow, as well as songwriting contributions by American Idol champ Kris Allen and former ‘N Sync member J.C. Chasez. Morrison himself co-wrote four songs. “I was very inspired, growing up, by Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra, those old crooners, but I wanted to have more of a contemporary vibe to it as well. So I decided to not try to be anyone and just be me and do what I wanted to do, and it kind of flowed a little bit more.” The result is an eclectic set with a decidedly melodic pop feel. The young actor was bitten by the acting bug as a child, growing up in Orange County, California but he says that his life might easily have taken a different path. “My dad’s a midwife,” he says, “and I actually delivered a couple of babies myself. It was a lot of blood, a lot of screaming, but I have great respect for my dad, just watching him do that. But Morrison, whose mother was a nurse, never felt pushed to go into the family business.“They were really supportive of me being an actor.” After graduating from Orange County High School of the Arts, Morrison headed to New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. During his freshman year, however, he won a role in the chorus of the Broadway musical Footloose. Forced to choose, he left school and has never looked back. He went on to appear in the Broadway production of The Rocky Horror Show before getting his big break when he was cast as Link Larkin in Hairspray. Even as his stage career blossomed, Morrison was pursuing music as well.“I’ve been in six boy bands in my life,” he says, though he admits that most were ‘fake’ groups put together for commercials. One, Fresh Step, was part of a comedy sketch on The Late Show with David Letterman. Morrison continued to ply his acting craft on stage, including a Tony Award-nominated performance in The Light in the Piazza (2005), and in TV shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent, the soap opera As the World Turns and the ABC television musical Once Upon a Mattress (2005). His films include Dan in Real Life (2007) and Music and Lyrics (2007).When Glee came along in 2009, Morrison admits that its phenomenal success caught him off guard. “I read the script, and it was a great script, but I was like, “An hour comedy on Fox about kids singing and dancing in high school? Eh, not going to happen,’’ he recalls with a laugh.“I can’t believe the global phenomenon that the show has become. I’m just so proud to be a part of this (show) that actually says something, and there’s a really great message every week. Our story’s about being underdogs, and we’ve made the underdog kind of cool, so that’s a great thing to do, ” he says.Source
