FAA: So what went through your mind when you first heard Gwyneth was going to be guest starring on the show?

Matthew: “I didn’t have any expectations with Gwyneth. And she is just like, she blew me away. She’s the most joyous professional, she’s just a light. Like everyone loved working with her. I couldn’t wait to have my scenes with her. I don’t know, there’s just something about her, she just fit in so well with the cast, and she’s so easy to talk to. There was never any like “I’m a star” kind of thing. She was just normal, down to earth. You know, her kids came and hung out on the set.”

FAA: Word has it the mash-up you and Gwyneth do is off the hook – How’d you describe it?

Matthew: “I’d say it all culminates in the best mash-up we’ve ever done on the show. It’s a mash-up of Singing in the Rain and Rhianna’s Umbrella. And it was a full on dance number in water. We were all decked out in like kind of 40’s attire with umbrellas. We were wet for six hours straight, that was the only uncomfortable part, but other than that it was an amazing number.”

FAA: It sounds like you two have had a lot of fun

Matthew: “Gwyneth was having a ball. I mean it was hard not to in that scene even though we were so uncomfortable and stuff, but she always had a smile on her face. Like she was loving it. Like just, you know, it was like kids at a playground in that scene. We were just sliding and kicking water and jumping in puddles. It was awesome. It was infectious.

FAA: Gwyneth is obviously known for her acting – so what came to mind for you when you heard her sing?

Matthew: ““Gwyneth’s got some pipes! Like I was really surprised, ‘cause, not that I should be surprised, but I never heard her sing before or dance. I mean she’s a real triple threat. I was happy ‘cause when I read the script, I was like, “Oh, she’s got a lot of songs, I hope she can sing.”

FAA: It seems like the guest stars on GLEE really get an opportunity to shine and display all their talents – did Gwyneth surprise you?

Matthew: “Gwyneth had the most jam-packed episode of any guest star we’ve ever had. I mean we’ve had some really good ones too, like Neil Patrick Harris and Kristin Chenoweth, but she (Gwyneth) spoke Spanish, she had like three huge dance numbers, she played Mary Todd Lincoln, she did these crazy voiceovers, she got punched in the face, and she was great at all of it. She’s really good at getting socked in the face. But she’s an Olympian. She’s a Glee Olympian. She got the gold medal for this performance.”
