Matthew Morrison Reveals Midwife Experience

Is there anything “Glee” star Matthew Morrison can’t do?

He can act, sing, dance and apparently, ushering newborn babies into the world is one of his lesser-known talents.

“I’ve been in a delivery room once, where I delivered two babies,” Matthew, 33, casually told Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson at the junket for his latest movie, “What to Expect When You’re Expecting,” in Los Angeles on Friday. “My dad is a midwife.”

The actor, who plays Evan (a man who fathers Cameron Diaz’s character’s baby after the pair are partnered on a celebrity dance competition show) in the upcoming movie, continued to stun Shaun with revelations about his delivery room happenings.

“I was a senior in high school and it was supposedly take your kid to work day, I guess,” he said. “[My dad] just kind of just talked me through it.

“I don’t think the women really knew what was going on anyway,” he added, laughing.

Matthew’s on-screen partner Cameron, who was also on hand for the junket, told Shaun she’s also witnessed labor and delivery firsthand.

“I have [been in the delivery room] three times, once for a C-section that was terrifying — it was like, not expected at all, and two vaginal births,” she explained. “[With] my sister, all three of them… I’m definitely not hands-on, but I’m right there with her.”

Cameron said she’s still not feeling the pressure to have children of her own, despite the fact that she will turn 40 in August.

“I love kids. I have many kids in my life, I’ve been an auntie for 15 years… I also have many friends who have babies,” she said. “So, I feel my life is very full of children. I love children, I’m totally open to having my own family, however that may come to me, but obviously… you have to find the right person to do that with.

“When that happens, I’m excited about that,” she added.

“What to Expect When You’re Expecting” (based on the best-selling book by Heidi Murkoff) opens in theaters on May 18.

Glee star Matthew Morrison tips Cheryl Cole to be a big hit in the US

ACTOR Matthew Morrison has urged Cheryl Cole to go Stateside for a stint in high school smash Glee.

He said the former X Factor judge would be a big hit after seeing her make her movie debut in his new film.

The Girls Aloud star makes a cameo as a dance show judge in What To Expect When You’re Expecting.

Matthew, 33, said: “We spent three days doing the celebrity dance scene. It was great hanging out with Cheryl because I come to London quite often and I know you can’t leave the city without seeing her face or hearing about her.

“So it was good to talk to her and see what a nice and beautiful person she is.

“She wasn’t asking me for acting tips but she plays herself so I think she did all right. The part wasn’t really written so she did a lot of adlibbing. She was good.

“She has all the tools to be in our show. I think she would be a perfect fit for Glee.”

Matthew stars with Cameron Diaz in the movie – based on a bestselling book about pregnancy – as a pair on a Strictly-Come-Dancing-style US TV show.
But their preparation for the dance steps was carried out at very long distance – Matthew practised his moves in Los Angeles while Cameron prepared in New York.

He said: “Then we came together in Atlanta and had one rehearsal. But the girl I was dancing with in LA was not as tall as Cameron so we had to redo some of the moves.”

Despite the bizarre lead-up to filming, Matthew – who plays Mr Schuester in hit show Glee – and Cameron glided through the dance steps for the movie.
He added: “It was good. The sign of a good dancer to me is someone who will let you lead and she let me lead.”

Not surprisingly, it turns out that Matthew is a Cameron Diaz fan and he was knocked out by the sexy star’s personality.

He said: “It was wonderful. She is exactly what you would think that Cameron Diaz would be. She’s very playful and always has a smile on her face. She’s always cracking jokes – we had a great time.”

Being in Glee has won Matthew an army of fans – and has led to a very strange gift from one of the show’s devotees.

He said: “In London a Glee fan made cupcakes that looked like breasts. I don’t know if they were modelled on her breasts but, no, I did not eat them.”

Although there is a talent show sequence in What To Expect When You’re Expecting, Matthew isn’t an avid watcher of those types of shows.

He said: “I’m neither for or against them. I would never want to do one. Coming up through the ranks of showbiz is exactly how I wanted to do it.
“But some really great acts have come out of talent shows. They have their place.”

But after that diplomatic response, he was adamant that he would never dream of hosting a talent show.

He said: “Oh God, no. There is nothing creative about it – you are just reading off the tele-prompter.”

In What To Expect When You’re Expecting, which also stars Jennifer Lopez and Dennis Quaid, the camera follows the experiences of five couples who are in various stages of pregnancy.

The baby talk at the centre of the film is a very familiar subject for Matthew because his father is one of America’s very few male midwives.

He said: “My dad is one of about only 50 male midwives in the US. So this film was a lot of fun for me because he gave me tips.

“I feel a lot of my dad was brought into this movie. It just made the experience that bit more amazing. I could ask him a lot of questions about birth and pregnancy in general.”

Even more surprisingly, Matthew has had hands-on experience of being a midwife because his dad invited him along to help with his work.
Matthew said: “While I was in high school, I actually delivered a few babies myself.

“It kind of freaked me out, more than anything. My dad’s stories of what had happened at work scared me. He’d tell me how he had delivered a 14-year-old girl’s baby that day. I respect my dad so much but it made me think that I didn’t want to do that job for a living.”

Fatherhood, on the other hand, is something that is very definitely in Matthew’s plans.

He said: “It is something I have always wanted. I definitely know that I want a family some day.”

Matthew admits he is an old-fashioned romantic who enjoys preparing a candle-lit meal – and he reckons cooking is sexy.

He said: “I’d like to think that I try to be as chivalrous as I can be. Once I chartered a boat and had rose petals scattered all over the deck and prepared a whole meal.

“It was a long time ago and I imagine that it was the most romantic thing I’ve done.”

An actor, singer and dancer who has appeared in many Broadway shows, Matthew – who has Scottish roots – is best known for his starring role in Glee.

He admits with a smile that the global success of the TV series has changed his life.

He said: “This movie – What To Expect When You’re Expecting – is the first time I didn’t have to audition for a part. So the success of Glee changed things in that way.

“In, fact the producer of the film said they didn’t want anyone else for this part because the person they cast had to act and dance.”

Matthew is delighted that Glee is enjoying a lengthy run on the small screen.

He added: “I want to be with the show as long as I possibly can.

“It is a good gig for an actor. To have gainful employment 10 months out of the year is pretty amazing.”

But Matthew would still like to spread his wings and tackle very different roles.

He would even like to give tough-guy stars such as Bruce Willis a run for their money.

He added: “I do martial arts and stuff so I’d like to do an action role or something dark.

“I’d like to kick some ass on screen – I think that would be fun”.
