Public Events –> 2014 –> Concert at Dominican University – Chicago (March 8)Pictures sourceMatthew Morrison left audiences gleeful at the 34th Annual Dominican University Trustee Benefit Concert and Gala on March 8.Morrison might be best known for his role as Will Schuester on Fox’s “Glee,” but before his hugely popular TV success, Morrison began his career as a Broadway star, appearing in productions such as “Hairspray,” “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Footloose,” and winning a Tony Award for his work in “The Light in the Piazza.” He performed many of the Broadway hits from his newest album, “Where It All Began,” at the Dominican concert.“I know this might come as a surprise, but I’m not really a high school teacher,” Morrison joked to the 1,000 audience members, referring to his “Glee” character.Morrison performed a mix of classic show tunes and jazz songs, as opposed to the pop mash-ups done on the show. He also shared with the audience his personal story of becoming a rising Broadway star.During the intermission, Dominican President Donna M. Carroll presented the Bravo Award to WTTW-Channel 11. Phil Ponce accepted the award on behalf of the station.For the second half of the show, Morrison performed more songs and ballads and introduced his band. As an added bonus for “Glee” fans, his piano player is also the piano player on the show.“Music is the original social network,” Morrison said on stage. “I like singing at classy places like this and singing classy songs.”The concert is expected to raise more than $450,000, with all proceeds going toward scholarships for students at Dominican.Source
