Matthew Morrison remembers the first time he met US President Obama. He was wearing a Nazi uniform.”It was the Kennedy Center Honors,” says Morrison, “and they were honouring Mel Brooks, and so I did this number from The Producers called Springtime for Hitler, and I was in a full Nazi Stormtrooper outfit.”So, Obama comes backstage and I was like, ‘uh, hello Mr President . . . this isn’t how I had envisioned meeting you!’ And he started laughing and said, ‘well, I’m not going to take a picture with you!’ It was a really funny moment.”Incidentally, Morrison (32) has since formed a “cool relationship” with Obama…as you do when you’re the star of one of the biggest TV shows on the planet. Yep, Glee is still with us, folks. On the box. On stage. On CD. And now, “Mr Schuester”, McKinley High’s Spanish teacher and Glee Club director, has an album out. In real life. Where he’s Matthew Morrison, Broadway star turned TV heartthrob. The self-titled record, a collection of covers and original numbers, somewhere in the vein of Michael Buble meets Justin Timberlake (his own description), features a number of high-profile guests, including Sting, Elton John, and his Glee co-star, the lovely Gwyneth Paltrow.BroadwayMorrison’s CV shows the Californian native is far from a newcomer in the business of show. There’s the Broadway productions (Footloose, Hairspray), a Tony Award nomination for his role in The Light in the Piazza, various small parts in TV and film (Ghost Whisperer, CSI: Miami, Music and Lyrics) and a, erm, short stint in a boy band. But his role on Glee (for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe) is probably the biggest thing he’s ever done.I wonder if a younger Morrison would have been ready for all this attention when he left New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts for a career in musical theatre.”Uh, no,” he replies. “I mean, I would have been able to handle it, but I don’t think I would have had the perspective I have on it that I do now. I’ve been through the business, and I know what it is, and yeah, I know that Glee is a huge show, but it’ll be gone some day and I will have moved on from it. I’m in a much better place in my head, to deal with this kind of attention and notoriety that the show has brought. I mean, I don’t think anyone could ever really prepare themselves for this kind of rocket ship that has happened for all of us.”Morrison is a hard worker — no doubt about that. Our interview takes place at 6.30am LA time — four hours after he finished shooting an episode of Glee.”I actually get excited to see my bed” he laughs, “because I don’t see it that often!”But the fame thing can’t be ignored. Having developed a close friendship with Paltrow, the two are now forced to deal with media rumours of an affair (Paltrow is married to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin). The all-singing, all-dancing performer is constantly quizzed on his sexuality, too (he’s straight, by the way). Must get a little crazy at times?”At times, it does,” he offers. “Especially when you’re hanging out with someone like Gwyneth. She’s become a great friend of mine and when that stuff came out, I was scared. I was scared that it would jeopardise the friendship that I had made with her. But she’s been in the business a long time, so she was just like, ‘you know, this is what it is, and it’s not going to stop me being your friend’.”That’s a great attitude to have. Whether it’s the press, or just people talking, you can’t let them rule your life, you know? I know my own truth and I know what I’m doing here.”As Morrison’s concert tour kicks off in Dublin, perhaps he should seek out some of his Irish relatives beforehand.”I’m going to talk to my grandma about that. She’s still in contact with a lot of my relatives in Ireland, so I’m going to try to contact them and invite them to the show.” Good man.A third season may be in the works, but is he worried about what happens when Glee is over?”No, not at all,” he says. “You know, there might never be another Glee in my future, but I will have had it and have had that experience, and it’s something I will always treasure. I’ll be okay.”Source
