With a new album, Where it All Began out yesterday, a televised concert airing throughout the month and a hit TV show that will be filming again before long, actor and singer Matthew Morrison has the kind of energy-sapping schedule that could knock the singing-and-dancing right out of a man. Good thing for all those juices, massages, and long runs (on which, incidentally, he sings to himself.) Here, what else we learned while catching up with a man on the move.
What he did to work out this week:
Because of my travel schedule, I wasn’t able to get to the gym for a workout this week. However, my favorite part of traveling is being able to run in different cities and places I visit. For example, in New York City, a morning run in Central Park is essential. I was in Chicago and ran the equivalent of a 10k on Lake Shore Drive. In London, Hyde Park is a beautiful area for a run. In all, I ran about 25 miles this week. With a heavy travel schedule, it’s important not only to stay active, but to also be mindful of what you eat.
Best advice he’s gotten from a trainer or nutritionist:
Stretch after everything. I know it can be tedious, especially when time is an issue, but it’s so worth it in the long run. No pun intended.
How he prepares to perform onstage:
Because I incorporate a lot of dance throughout my live performances, I need to continuously train my vocals and stamina. Being an avid runner, I’ll often incorporate singing into my workouts to help get my breath control. So don’t be surprised if you hear me singing as I scoot by you!
Favorite healthy meal:
I love juicing. Since I purchased my own juicer, I’ll usually do it myself at home. But it does take some time and if I’m rushed I’ll swing by a Pressed Juicery.
Yoga. Hot, cold, whatever! I’m totally obsessed! It’s great for your body and mind.
What he’s totally over:
School shootings. I mean, what is going on these days?
Best vacation he’s ever taken:
I love everything about Hawaii. The culture, the people, the food. I love that it feels exotic, but you still have the luxury and amenities of being in the states.
What totally relaxes him:
Besides going to the dentist? Cooking with my girl.
Artist he can’t stop playing:
This new band named Vintage Trouble. Just cool. The lead singer sounds just like Otis Redding. Just cool!
Book on his bedside table:
Right now, Unbroken. Amazing WW2 survival story.
Massages. I work hard and love to pamper myself with some deep tissue body work.
Who has made him feel star struck or tongue-tied:
Meeting the most powerful man in the world, President Obama, was probably the most “struck” I’ve felt!
Three things still on his bucket list:
Having kids. Going to the moon. Competing in an Ironman.
Number one reason for taking care of his body:
It gives me a good sense of self confidence. A feeling of being able to tackle any mental and physical challenge that comes my way.
