Television made him famous, but the stage is his more-intense love.Matthew Morrison, Will Schuester on “Glee” to most of us, counts himself lucky to have found his love of the theater at an early age. And lucky to be on a hit show in a role that fits him like a glove. Yet …“I’ve spent the last four years on a television show, but there’s no greater experience for me than performance in front of a live audience and sharing with them,” he says.Matthew Morrison and the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops led by Lucas Richman will open the PNC Pops season at afternoon and evening concerts Saturday and Sunday at Heinz Hall, Downtown. He’ll sing Broadway standards he’s recently recorded for his second CD, which is in its final mix with the orchestra tracks.“This will be my first performance of these songs that I’ll be having on the new album. The last album was a wonderful challenging experience,” he says, “but at the end of the day, this new album is the one I always wanted to make while I was growing up. “Expect such favorites as “On the Street Where You Live” and “The Lady is a Tramp,” as well as a mash-up of “Come Rain or Some Shine” with “Basin Street Blues.”Morrison was into soccer big-time when he was growing up in Orange County, Calif., and wanted to be a professional athlete or maybe a fireman.“It was kind of a fluke that my parents sent me to Arizona to spend my summer with my grandma,” he recalls. “She put me in a children’s theater program. That was it for me. I found my passion at such a young age.”He did a musical while in high school, and was already performing on Broadway while a freshman in college.“I’ve had a lot of luck in my life. I’ve worked with some great Broadway people, Broadway legends, who have shown me what a true professional is,” he says. “Some actors just have things handed to them and don’t put in the work to get deeper inside the piece. The best schooling I ever had was being on Broadway.”Naturally, Morrison was excited at the prospect of performing with Marvin Hamlisch at these Pops concerts. After Hamlisch died in August, Morrison added one of his songs to the program in tribute, but wants to keep the title secret until the show.Morrison inhabited many roles on Broadway and off-Broadway, but found a new dimension of identity with the role he plays on “Glee.”“I think Will Schuester is who I would have been if I hadn’t gone to New York right after high school and had the cues I had. I would have gone to a local school and been a teacher at a performing-arts high school,” he says. “That’s how I found the character. What if I married my high-school girlfriend? It’s been great.”Coming from a stage background, he had a big learning curve to perform in front of the camera every day, and to play the same character for so long. He seized another opportunity to grow when he directed an episode of “Glee.”“It not only helped me as an actor. Sometimes you focus on your part and what other actors are doing. This experience helped me see the whole picture,” he says. “From costume department to lighting department, I had to run the show and tell everyone what I wanted. It was an opportunity to get my feet wet directing, and it’s such a family over there; everyone had my back.”Morrison says he would like to direct more. “The hard part about it is acting in it, as well. You put on the director’s hat and take it off and do a scene. It’s like, ‘Where am I?’, a little confusing.”As for the future, Morrison’s plans must remain in his head, because he’s under contract to “Glee” and has no idea how long it will run.He has the luck of a person prepared for life’s opportunities.Source
